Researchers in Japan have been working to create a working Splatoon gun that can be used to play the game. In production since March, the gun combines a Wii U GamePad and controls inside a Splatoon-themed water pistol. It then utilises Sony’s head-mounted PSVR to provide an immersive element to the experience.
The GamePad is strapped to a players back to provide vibrations to the player as well as gyroscopic movement of your view to the HMD. It’s placed on your back as it’s apparently the best way to approximate where you’re pointing the gun.
The gun contains controls to move forward, backwards and to shoot and is wirelessly connected to the Wii U GamePad. The mechanism certainly works and allows you to interact with the game as if you were just playing with a standard controller.
While it’s not virtual reality per-say, it certainly takes elements of the experience to provide a step away from traditional gameplay. The Researchers and makers over at Kougaku Navi have issued multiple revisions to the setup so is only going to get better as time goes on.
Perhaps we’ll see a proper version of Splatoon optimised for VR in the near future with Nintendo’s NX console as there certainly seems to be a market for it, at least in Japan.
