Released in 2004, Valve’s classic sci-fi shooter Half-Life 2 remains one of the best PC games ever released. Now a third-party mod team is working to adapt the game so it can be played on modern VR headsets like the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.
The team has already posted up a quick trailer showing some of the gameplay for Half-Life 2 VR. It shows, among other things, how it looks when the player is using the game’s famous Gravity Gun with a VR controller like the Oculus Touch or the wands for the HTC Vive. In a Reddit post, one of the game’s developers says they plan to release a version of Half-Life 2 VR “soon” via Steam Greenlight.
Valve, of course, has created the SteamVR platforms that is used by the HTC Vive, among other devices. Its founder, Gabe Newell, said the developer is working on three full VR games at the moment. He also said that the team has tried to port its older games to work with VR headsets, including Half-Life 2. However, Newell claims that in the end “there was absolutely nothing compelling about it”. While that may be Newell’s opinion, we believe there are a ton of gamers who would love to play the game in virtual reality, as they explore the ruins of City 17 to take out zombies and Striders.
