HTC has launched pre-orders for an HTC Vive add-on which will transform the device into a wireless product. The 1,499 RMB (~$220) accessory will unshackle the Vive headset from the PC system it would previously be tethered to.
The product was developed not by HTC but by TPCAST: one of startups which joined HTC’s Vive X program when it launched a few months ago. The device will last for around 90 minutes on a single charge of its battery, but a larger battery, which must sit in the users pocket, is also expected to arrive at a later date.
Alvin Wang Graylin, China Regional President of Vive at HTC told UploadVR that there’s no functional difference when using the new add-on, but that the overall experience would “greatly improve”.
Check out how it looks in the video below:
The accessory will go up for pre-order on HTC’s Chinese Vive website today at 10 AM EST, but the company currently has no plans to release the device outside of China.
