The Martian, the 2015 sci-fi movie about an astronaut who gets himself stranded on the red planet, is getting a new VR “experience”. Fox Digital has announced that The Martian VR Experience will be available to download on Tuesday, November 15 for the HTC Vive and the Sony PlayStation VR platforms (support for the Oculus Rift is due at a later date).
The VR experience is supposed to put you in the role of the film’s stranded astronaut Mark Watney, played in The Martian by Matt Damon. Here’s how it’s described:
Executive produced by Ridley Scott and directed by Robert Stromberg, The Martian VR Experience is an interactive, immersive adventure with viewers participating from astronaut Mark Watney’s perspective, performing tasks that will facilitate his chances for survival. Viewers can fly onto the surface of Mars, steer at zero gravity through space, drive a rover navigating over craters and experience key scenes from the hit film in a 360-degree virtual reality environment.
That all sounds interesting, but then there’s the price of this “experience”. It will cost $19.99 to download, and that’s a fairly big price to pay for what is basically a semi-interactive promo for a movie that’s over a year old now. Will you be checking out The Martian VR Experience when it is released on Tuesday?
