Today is officially Alien Day, in a celebration of the long-running Alien series of sci-fi horror movies (April 26 was picked because the planet where the original Alien movies takes place is called LV-426). Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR headset owners can join in the fun by downloading a free two-minute 360-degree movie from the Oculus Store designed to promote the next full-length movie in the series.
The movie is called Alien: Covenant In Utero, and it is supposed to offer fans of the series a way to experience the birth of one of these famous xenomorphs up close and personal. Considering that the births in the Alien films usually end up with the person who has the creature gestating in its body dying in a horrifying fashion, the new VR movie promises to be a rather bloody and scary experience.
While this is not a full-fledged Alien VR game, it certainly shows that movie studios look at virtual reality as a new way to promote their upcoming films, especially if they have any sci-fi or horror elements. The actual movie, Alien: Covenant, is scheduled to hit movie theaters on May 19. Hopefully we will get a real Alien VR game experience in the near future.
