Last year, The Wall Street Journal opened up an entire department dedicated to immersive 360 degree content, and it seems the world has taken notice. The company’s content can be viewed on almost any platform, including Carboard, Daydream, Gear VR, Oculus, and desktop, and has lead to thousands of people around the world experiencing journalism in a completely new way. Now, another major news organization is looking to crash onto the scene, spurring up some major competition for The Wall Street Journal, and they’re doing it in a big way.
CNNVR is the new virtual reality department from CNN. Though the organization has experimented with the format before, producing over 50 pieces of virtual content in the last year alone, they have opted to expand this type of coverage into its own department, and has created methods to watch all the action on almost every major platform, just as The Wall Street Journal has done.
You can watch all of the new group’s content online at CNN.com/VR, and can use the new mobile apps to watch on the go. Though the company has yet to officially support the HTC Vive, it does work natively with Daydream, Gear VR, and Rift. You can also watch on the desktop of your computer, though you won’t get quite the same experience as you would if you were wearing a VR headset.
Did you enjoy the 360 degree content the company was already producing for sites like Facebook? Hopefully the development of the new division will give the platform more room to grow and will cover larger stories over time.
