21st Century Fox has just announced their new ‘FoxNext’ immersive entertainment division, and is looks like the company is already off to creating a slew of new content. The division will be working with Within, an virtual reality storytelling company, to produce new virtual experiences placed in the ‘Planet of the Apes’ universe. This isn’t a huge surprise, as Fox is now an investor in the studio, but they should be able to do some great things to help the new division get off the ground.
The studio believes that virtual reality is the next big step in film-making, and that it can help the company tell the ‘Planet of the Apes’ story in a way that was not possible before. FoxNext President Salil Mehta explains:
Virtual reality is the next generation of entertainment and Planet of the Apes provides the perfect canvas to create a new kind of filmmaking experience that will further immerse fans into the franchise. In partnership with visionary filmmakers like Chris, and companies like Within, Fox will continue to push the envelope to create immersive experiences that bring audiences into the action like never before.
The new division also appears to be working on a new VR film wholly separate from the Planet of the Apes universe, titled “I remember you”. They are working with Annapurna Pictures on this venture, who have already developed a number of other virtual reality films themselves.
FoxNext seem to be taking the venture seriously, and are looking to learn from who they deem to be the best in the business when it comes to virtual reality experiences. They understand that you can’t just jump into a market like this with zero experience, and it looks as if they are hoping to learn from industry professionals to get some hands on experience into what virtual reality content creation is really about.
Are you excited for any of the titles announced? Looking forward to the Planet of the Apes experience?
