They will join primary founder and current CEO Euan Macdonald who has over 25 years of VFX and CGI experience for major studios such as LucasFilm, Pixar, and Disney, and has been credited on big hits like Star Wars, Jurassic Park, and Harry Potter. In addition, CryWorks co-founder is Hans Uhlig, a trained mechanical engineer and filmmaker who has worked for Electronic Arts and Polygon, as well as ILM and LucasFilm. He will oversee the development of what is said to be an industry-first capture and production technology and determine how best to apply it to the VR landscape. The company’s final co-founder is Kymber Lim who has experience overseeing development for visual effects companies such as Psyop, Digital Domain, and Method Studios and will serve as the CCO.
CryWorks announced its creation via a press release following its successful venture capital fundraising, which features Michael Bay’s 451 media group as its lead investor.
CryWorks will focus primarily on “immersive formats” for its content which will also tap into the “exploding VR market” to create “new forms of entertainment and media…franchises and brands that transcend VR.”
It’s great to see a brand new company whose main focus will be that of Virtual Reality. With the experience of the leadership team that form CryWorks, it will certainly be exciting to see what VR content will come out of the studio in the next few years.
