The Note 7 is expected to come with a USB Type-C connector, which would render the current Gear VR unsupported. Samsung are therefore planning to release a revamped Gear VR alongside the Note 7 to take advantage of the more advanced connector.
The glimpse of the new Gear VR comes courtesy of Steve Hemmerstoffer (aka @OnLeaks) on Twitter. It’s black in color and obviously comes with the new supported USB Type-C connection. As far as dimensions go, it’s 207mm wide by 122mm high and 98.5mm deep, compared to the current version which measures 198mm x 116mm x 90mm but looks sleeker somehow. The new Gear VR-C reportedly weighs 300 grams.
The new Gear VR also improves the viewing angle over the current model up to 110 degrees from 96 degrees. Apparently, the new Gear VR will also be compatible with the whole S6 and S7 family, possibly using a microUSB to Type-C converter. Let’s hope Samsung include one in the box with the new Gear VR.
No details have been revealed to suggest any changes have been made to the software of the Gear VR, so it just looks like it’s hardware that will change at this moment in time. With the increased capabilities of USB Type-C, it will be interesting to see what else Samsung can leverage from this new more advanced connector to enhance the functionality of the interface between the Note 7 and Gear VR.
