Oculus is bringing the popular Minecraft to both the Rift and Gear VR to give gamers a taste of the world in virtual reality, and the first glimpse of the game will appear at GDC 2016 next week.
The invite-only event will showcase Minecraft running on Samsung’s Gear VR headset and also its own Rift headset. Oculus CTO, John Carmack, will be in attendance at the event, who played an important role in bringing Minecraft to the virtual world and will no doubt have things to say about the difficulties the company faced adding VR to the game.
“Minecraft was something that I was desperate to get into virtual reality, because I thought it would be critically important,”
More than 70 million copies of Minecraft have been sold to date meaning that bringing it over to VR could attract that vast range of consumers to a new platform and hence kickstart VR headset sales and awareness.
Release dates for Minecraft VR are yet to be confirmed but the fact the company are demoing the game indicates that good progress is being made towards an official launch. The question will be whether any additional features have been included to optimise Minecraft for VR, or if it is simply a port.
