Ever wanted to remodel your house in virtual reality?
Whether you answered yes or no to that question, IKEA have just released an experience that will allow you to do just that. Using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4 and the HTC Vive, Ikea is enabling you to walk around a virtual kitchen and model it to your liking using real products. While IKEA has previously released 3D modeling tools to attempt to help customers visualize its products in their households, a virtual reality experience lets users walk around and view a virtual kitchen as if it was really there.
Using the tools available in the software, customers can swap out different color combinations for products such as cabinets and countertops, and fully experience what it’s like to be in their new kitchen. While the software is still in it’s infancy, it is evident that IKEA is looking to build on the experience to allow customers to completely model their house with IKEA’s wide range of products.
Jesper Brodin, managing director of IKEA of Sweden had this to say about the new experience:
Virtual reality is developing quickly and in five to ten years it will be an integrated part of people’s lives.. We see that virtual reality will play a major role in the future of our customers. For instance, someday, it could be used to enable customers to try out a variety of home furnishing solutions before buying them.
Being able to swap out objects in your house with extreme ease and for free is nothing short of a designer’s wet dream, and looks like it could be the future of interior modeling. IKEA’s software is available now for free through Valve’s Steam gaming platform, and will be consistently updated through the end of August, when the company aims to officially release its pilot test.
