While Oculus and Sony have had their own first party VR home theater experiences for a while now, HTC has been lacking a bit. That isn’t to say they don’t exist on the platform. Third party options like SimpleVR Video Player offer pretty substantial viewing experiences, but many people want to be able to strap on their headset and jump into something developed by the first party. That’s why HTC has just announced Vive Video, a high-quality media viewing platform that can play 2D, 3D, 180 degree and 360 degree media.
The app was created by HTC Creative Labs, and gives a huge amount of customization options to be able to view content in whatever setting you like. When viewing 2D videos, the user is able to resize the screen to completely fill their view, or scale it down to watch it as if you were in a theater. In 180 degree and 360 degree modes, the environment will adapt to your perspective to truly immerse you in the experience.
In addition to these features, HTC has included a sneak peak at a new virtual reality animation called ‘INVASION! 360 VR’. The animation was created by Baobab Studios, and directed by the same director as Madagascar, so there’s no doubt it will be a high-quality film.
If you have a Vive yourself, you can download the new Vive Video application from Viveport.
