VR game The Lab is the highest rated on Steam

The Lab is developed by Valve and is the only VR title the company currently has to its name, but it’s topping the Steam charts.

A VR-only title, The Lab is available for free on Steam and has beaten more than 9,000 games on Steam to top the charts. It offers eight short experiences that utilise room-scale technology ranging from photogrammetry to castle defense with a bow and arrow.

Welcome to The Lab, a compilation of Valve’s room-scale VR experiments set in a pocket universe within Aperture Science. Fix a robot, defend a castle, adopt a mechanical dog, and more. Still not sold? It’s free!

The Lab has topped Steam’s list of top rated titles, beating out other popular Valve classics like Portal (2007) and Portal 2 (2011) that aren’t VR optimised. To date, 99% of the game’s 717 reviews are positive, giving the game a review rating of “Overwhelming Positive”. It seems to be that The Lab is a perfect example of virtual reality on the HTC Vive and appears to be the go-to game for demonstrating the capabilities of the headset.

It could be that the title has reached the top of the charts thanks to its free price tag rather than purely on rating or experience in the game. However, it’s beaten out competition from free game Iron Snout so perhaps it is that the VR capabilities of the game appeals to the masses.

Valve says they’re continuing to work on their own first-party VR content, but are keeping close to its chest exactly what that entails:

“We are certainly continuing our work to expand Steam VR for developers and aspiring content creators, and working on our VR content. But we have no specific announcements to make today”
