Acer is kicking off IFA 2016 with a bang. The Taiwanese company just took the wraps off several new phones, laptops, and monitors, but the star of the lineup is clearly the Predator 21 X, a ridiculously powerful gaming laptop with a curved screen.
You read that right – the Predator 21 X is the first laptop with a curved screen, a feature we’ve only seen on high-end TVs, monitors, and smartphones before. And it’s a massive 21-inch 2560 x 1080 panel, guaranteed to immerse you into whatever game you’re playing.
You’re probably wondering how a 21-inch curved screen works on a laptop. Let’s just say that Acer gave up all pretenses of portability here. The Predator 21 X is a no-holds-barred monster of a machine, that looks more like a desktop that’s been compressed into a rough laptop form factor. The display is concave, but the Predator 21 X’s lid is actually flat, and as a result the lid alone is thicker than some ultrabooks.
Moving on, the Predator 21 X’s features a brand new Intel Kaby Lake processor (seventh generation), a revised version of Intel’s 14-nm architecture that delivers improved performance and efficiency. Presumably, the chip is the 15-Watt U version, instead of the mobile oriented Y version, which would be really underpowered for this machine.
To keep everything cool and running smoothly, Acer packed the Predator 21 X with no fewer than five fans, including three metallic AeroBlade ones.
Graphics duty is handled by two Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 cards coupled in SLI, making for a tremendous setup that should be ready to handle most gaming and virtual reality tasks.
For good measure, Acer equipped the Predator 21 X with eye-tracking tech from Tobii, another industry first. The idea is to let users control games and other compatible software with just their eyes, though we have doubts about the system’s usability for action-intensive games like first person shooters.
Rounding up the feature list of this crazy machine is the fully customizable backlight Cherry MX mechanical keyboard. Because that’s how the Predator 21 X rolls.
The Acer Predator 21 X will be available from the first quarter of 2017, but its price hasn’t been disclosed yet – don’t expect it to be anything close to cheap.
