JVC Kenwood has published an official press release, announcing that its upcoming XR headset, called HMD-VS1W, will start selling in Japan near the end of March.
The enterprise-oriented headset was first announced late last year, offering a proprietary display technology called half-mirror. “[This method] achieves both immersive and realistic image display and natural operation feeling in virtual reality applications such as various simulations and trainings,” states the company in the press release.
By using 2,560×1,440 pixels per eye via dual 5.5-inch LCD panels that make it possible to view the image directly through the mirror, instead of viewing it through a lens, JVC was able to achieve a horizontal viewing angle of 120 degrees with no peripheral blur or chromatic aberration.
The headset is aimed at the enterprise market and applications such as remote control, employee training, and product design. Because its entire front part is see-through, users can maintain a clear view of their surroundings and visually check the actual equipment and instruments they’re physically interacting with within mixed reality.
Because the HMD-VS1W headset uses SteamVR tracking, it boasts compatibility with popular VR controllers, including Vive wands and Valve Index controllers. At the moment, JVC doesn’t mention a specific price. Instead, the headset is listed as an “open price” product, which means there’s no suggested retail price.
