You Can Now Play Resident Evil 2 & 3 in VR

The list of Resident Evil games that can be experienced in virtual reality has just expanded substantially thanks to developer praydog.

On their GitHub page, the developer has published an initial release of a mod framework, scripting platform, and modding tool for RE Engine games. Praydog’s work is based on Kanan, an open-source memory patcher for modding MMORPG Mabinogi using JavaScript.

REFramework, as the work is called, currently works best with Resident Evil 2 and 3, offering 6 degrees of freedom, full-motion controls, physical knife damage, and physical grenade throwing.

To use the mode, you simply need to install SteamVR and extract REFramework into your game install folder. For more information and detailed step-by-step instructions with screenshots, you can read this guide.

Just know that turning games that were originally meant to be experienced on traditional monitors into VR experiences requires powerful hardware to achieve steadily high frame rates. What’s more, you’re almost guaranteed to encounter at least some issues and imperfections. For example, watching Resident Evil 2 and 3 cutscenes in VR can break their composition.

The good news is that there are already two native Resident Evil games for virtual reality platforms. The first is Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, which was released in 2017 for PSVR. The second one is Resident Evil 4, which was released near the end of 2021 for Quest 2.
