Epson, one of the world’s leaders in imaging and projection technology, has just announced the latest iteration of its Moverio augmented reality (AR) smart glasses.

Called Moverio BT-40 and BT-40S, the two new smart glasses are now available to pre-order, promising a state-of-the-art AR viewing experience with maximum comfort and an impressive list of features.

“This is a proud and exciting moment for Epson as we bring to market our fourth generation of Moverio augmented reality smart glasses,” commented Valerie Riffaud-Cangelosi, Head of Market Development at Epson Europe. “We have been in the AR space for ten years now, continuously improving our offering in response to customer and developer feedback.”

Both the Moverio BT-40 and BT-40S smart glasses deliver an increased display resolution (1080p), wider 34-degree field of view, and contrast ratio of 500,000:1 thanks to Epson’s see-through Si-OLED display technology.

The Moverio BT-40 communicates with the outside world through a USB Type-C port, while the Moverio BT-40S comes with an Intelligent Controller running Android. The controller includes built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, camera, flashlight, microphone, audio jack, as well as a bunch of sensors. Thanks to its touchscreen display and Google Play compatibility, it has applications in a wide range of uses, including museums, theaters, and healthcare.

“These new Moverio models bring advanced image quality in a binocular display with improved comfort and wearability to the rapidly increasing markets where we are seeing AR adoption grow, including industrial field service and front-line applications such as remote assistance and accessibility usage scenarios,” said Remi Del Mar, senior product manager at Epson America.

The Epson Moverio BT-40 and BT-40S retail for $579 USD and $999, respectively. Pre-orders have already started, and the first units are due to begin shipping in Q2 2021.
