The Square Enix Presents event is behind us, which means that we now have several new games to look forward to in the near future.

Among them is a virtual reality version of Space Invaders, the iconic arcade game that was first released in 1978 and has since then been recreated countless times by professional and amateur video game developers alike.

The official VR version of Space Invaders is being developed by Square Enix Montréal and Taito, the Japanese company behind the original. The game will feature proprietary augmented reality technology that promises to “breathe fresh energy into a game as timeless as Space Invaders.”

“We are extremely inspired by our collaboration with TAITO to re-imagine the Space Invaders franchise in a contemporary way while shaping it to our ambitious vision of what it can be on mobile,” said Patrick Naud, Head of Studio of Square Enix Montréal.

Not much else is known about the game so far since only a short teaser trailer and one image have been released, but the developers are trying to preserve the essence of Space Invaders.

“As fans of our classic series, they are treating Space Invaders with the utmost care and respect. We are thrilled that the game is coming out with new technology and fresh taste and will further expand the universe of the Space Invaders franchise,” said Tetsu Yamada, President and Representative Director, Taito Corporation

All fans of the original arcade classic can sign up now for a chance to participate in playtests and to receive the latest news about the game. No release date has been announced yet, but the latest evolution of Space Invaders could be available for download on iOS and Android devices later this year, considering that mobile games don’t take as long to develop as their desktop counterparts.
