When it comes to pushing tech forward, one industry that is always on the cusp of the ‘next thing’ is… porn. From VHS to DVD, DVD to Blu-Ray, and its massive growth on the web and via streaming, porn has been a big part of the evolution of media consumption over the years. That’s why it isn’t surprising to see that porn is quickly embracing VR as well.
While VR porn is nothing new, today PornHub – arguably the largest source for porn on the web – has launched a new section devoted exclusively to VR-optimized pornography. PornHub is teaming up with “BaDoinkVR” to provide this content and has both 180-degree and 360-degree VR scenes among its library of titles.
All the content at “pornhub.com/VR” can be consumed on a desktop ‘normally’, though just in normal ‘2D’. To get the true VR effect you’ll need to utilize a Samsung Gear VR, Google Cardboard, or one of the many Cardboard clones available through e-tailers everywhere. To help attract more attention to VR porn, PornHub is even giving away 10,000 Cardboard googles to its viewers. Of course PornHub’s VR section will also work with upcoming platforms like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, and perhaps even Playstation VR, if it has web browsing support.
The idea of VR porn is certainly an interesting one, taking the concept of pornography to new heights by adding a layer of immersion that just isn’t possible with ‘traditional’ porn. Is VR porn ‘exciting’ enough to drive adoption of VR faster than gaming and other forms of entertainment? That remains unseen, but it seems very likely that as VR becomes more and more commonplace, so too will VR porn.
